Dear Readers, I have a little “Notable Creatives” eye candy for Headnotes paid subscribers today. This post may be too long for your email provider, but you can click the subject line to read it on the Substack website or app.

Photography dominates American cookbooks. And while I love a gorgeously photographed book, I am always pleased when I see cookbooks that lean into illustration to tell their stories. Happily, I’ve noticed that some American publishers are beginning to use illustration more prominently.1 In the spirit of this—dare I say—emerging trend, I’m presenting several artists in today’s “Notable Creatives” whose food and drink illustrations would make an excellent fit for cookbooks.2

But first, there is a giveaway!

Before we dig into art, I have a giveaway for Headnotes readers. Here’s how it works: visit today's post on my Instagram feed and leave a comment with a link to your favorite cookbook creative—any illustrator, photographer, stylist, or designer who you admire. I’m always eager to learn about new talent, and I look forward to seeing who you are excited about. Bonus points for anyone who can identify the common theme in today’s art, and extra points if you follow me, too.

The winner will be selected at random and gifted a beautiful illustrated zine, Ways of Baking: Four Modern Cookies by Ellen Lupton and Jennifer Tobias. I’ll announce the winner in the next Headnotes post.

And without further ado, here are today’s “Notable Creatives.”

I feel a twinge of happiness every time I look at Clare Owen’s work. Her art is playful and elegant, and conveys a sense of pleasure. Owen’s rich color palettes feel luxurious and work so well for food. Looking for an artist for your forthcoming dessert cookbook? Look no further.
